American Independence Day: the 4th of July

Independence Day, commonly known as “The Fourth of July” or “July 4th” is a very important holiday to many citizens of the United States. Americans celebrate this day because on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was fully signed and approved by our Congress. This document declared that the original 13 member states of the United States of America would become a separate nation from Great Britain, and no longer be one of its colonies.

Today, the Fourth of July is celebrated with everything from picnics to barbecues to parades. The most famous part of any July 4th celebration is the fireworks! Many cities put on elaborate displays of light, sound, and color for everyone to see, and Pittsburgh is no exception. The largest fireworks display in Pittsburgh is usually held at Point State Park in Downtown. Many smaller displays are put on by local cities and towns. You are sure to find a way to celebrate this special holiday if you read your local community’s newsletter or bulletin.
